Sunbeams and Littlestars have been making chocolate apples.
The children worked together in small groups, ready to make chocolate apples in celebration of both Halloween and Bonfire Night.
They displayed good concentration skills as they waited patiently for their turn, yet remained engaged and watched what their peers were doing.
They listened with interest and followed instructions while taking turns and sharing equipment.
Staff used the opportunity to add new words into the conversation, such as “stirring”, “sprinkling”, and “dipping”; they also encouraged the children to repeat the words spoken by staff.
Together, they looked at the equipment they were using and spoke about the ingredients they needed.
Staff drew their attention to the differences in the sizes of bowls, measuring equipment, and spoons. This led to a conversation about “big and small” as they compared sizes. The children were encouraged to count out loud as they went.
We spoke about the traditions of Bonfire Night and the things we do to celebrate, as well as the bright colours we see in the sky. During this activity, the children showed great levels of focus; they encouraged each other and used very good manners, saying “thank you” to each other as they passed around ingredients.
When finished, the children washed their hands (most of them independently) and helped to clear away any mess. They were extremely pleased with their finished product, and they all welcomed praise for a job well done with big smiles!
